Research has shown that early parenting skills can have a dramatic effect on the success of children. Children are a gift full of joy, happiness, and excitement. They offer us the opportunity to see the world through their eyes of wonderment and curiousity. Children however do not come with instructions. For many parents the skills they have are a combination of thier own childhood experiences and those of friends and relatives. Many young parents are not prepared for the challenges of parenthood and if they were not exposed to proper parenting skills or do not have the support of skilled parents then the situation can be overwhelming.

Many people used to believe that parenting was a natural talent we all possess. And that with the right amount of love children would naturally become successful members of society. We now know that this is not true. Children require training, direction, and cultivation to become successful. We now know that there are certain practices and instruction that parents can use to help their children live up to their full potential.

Our goal is to provide our participants with these skills. The Truman Behavorial Health Center has developed a model parenting program to help young parents become better parents. Better parents usually raise better kids.
